Vacation Boredom

Well, it's obvious to me that someone has too much time on his hands. It's also obvious to me that the person's name is Zib. Ya see, I'm on vacation. Tomorrow I'm going to see the circus, and I'm supposed to be filming a movie this week, but so far... it's not happening. Oh well...

My Tablet and The Gimp

Ok, this is really annoying me. Remember that tablet I got for my birthday? Well, it's annoying the crap out of me. I can't use it in The Gimp! It simply is not working. I can use it in any program, but then when I open up The Gimp it freezes up and the pen will only respond in Flash. Oy. I want to start drawing my comic, but my tablet isn't working!

I sent a query to Adesso help support, but the response was that it has never been tested with The Gimp, and if it isn't working it simply isn't compatible. That really pisses me off.

The wierd part is, if I go to the 'Input Devices' dialouge in The Gimp, the stylus is listed there. There's the mouse and the stylus, with a little arrow next to the mouse. If I can figure out how to switch it to the stylus, I can use it. But I don't know how to do that. Anyone have a clue?

Well, today has had a few advances on the good front. Here's what happened that was good, in chronological order:

I got on High Honors in school. This means all of my grades this term were in the A range (A-, A, or A+), and that my effort and behavior grades were 1's (4 is the worst, 1 is the best).

A month ago, I took part in the National French Exam, a French comprehension test taken all over the country. Well today I got my score back, and I ranked 8th. In the country. I AM #8 IN THE WHOLE FRICKEN COUNTRY!

My friend TikiMatt got his name and a link on the front page of Docking Bay 101, one of the best Star Wars fan sites on the internet. Woot!

So yeah, great day. :D

Installing a New Drive

Ok I'm fed up with having only 40gb of storage space on my computer. I am constantly in a struggle to get space, and a "victory" is if I get 6gb. I haven't seen 10gb of nothing on this computer for months. So now I'm going to install a new hard drive.

I have a drive lying around from my first server, Tomato 1. I got an extra IDE cable to put it in the computer. I'm all set to go, except for one thing that keeps bothering me. The Ubuntu and Uru server installed on that hard drive. I'm worried that it will do something to my hard drive already installed here, and that I won't have my precious data anymore. :(

So here's what I'm doing. I'm first backing up everything important (My Documents. :P) on a DVD. Then I'm gonna install the drive and pray. Wish me luck!

I just had the idea to check out this page in IE (6), and I must say...it looks like crap. For one thing, the .png files don't work. They aren't transparent. For another thing, where's my sidebar?! Oh yeah, that's right. Down at the bottom where I wanted it. Wait- Oh that's right, it's not supposed to be at the bottom. IT'S A FRIGGEN SIDEBAR.

Update: While the page looks better in IE 7, most of the sidebar is still at the bottom. Congratulations on getting png transparency working, Microsoft! Also, the Opera-style page zoom is cool, but you can't remove the menu bar from a Windows app. It's a tradition that doesn't need to be broken.

Firefox Rant

Ok I know I'm usually "GO FIREFOX" and the like, but lately I just don't know. Firefox has been going downhill for me since 1.5 was officially released. Since then, I've had to create 3 new accounts on account of the current one failing. First, Firefox simply wouldn't open, and when it did it refused to load pages, and menus were entirely black, no text.

So I started a new account. That account worked fine until it started problems with updates. When I clicked a link from any app. other than Firefox, it would load a blank page with the green update logo up in the corner. When I clicked this, it said that there were no updates and returned me to the blank page with the update logo. By manually opening Firefox, it ran the updater and reported that there were no updates, then dropped me at the 'Firefox is updated, don't worry cuz u'll never see this page again' page, which is obviously bull since I saw that page every time I opened Firefox. So I tried disabling updates, which only made it worse because then I would always get a blank page with the update logo, but when I clicked it it said "updates have been disabled" and the menus wouldn't work.

So I started a new account. This one has been working well until today. I load up firefox, and lo and behold: my theme and extensions are not there. I opened the menus to check, and they were still there; but none of them were actually doing anything. I'm typing this on a default Firefox. No extensions, no theme.

I must say, Firefox has let me down too many times, and I'm actually considering switching browsers. Does anyone know how to fix the problem I'm currently having in Firefox, or does any one have a suggestion for another browser? I have Opera, Mozilla, Netscape, AOL *shudder* (which I can't use anyway), and the evil blue e. Don't worry, I'm not switching to IE. I don't like Firefox but I don't intend on killing my computer. And don't tell me about IE 7, because its worse than 6. No menu bar. No thanks.

The ELC Anemone

The ELC Anemone (which is also my trademark symbol) has gone through many stages.

First, it was a simple 3DS render:

No effects, no ray tracing.

Next came the simplistic render that was my header for so long:

I faded the edges with The Gimp to make it blend well with my blog, and I guess there's some basic material on it.

Then there was the faux cell-shaded anemone:

I liked this one, but the varying line width annoyed me, plus I wanted something that looked a bit more professional.

I got that with the next variation, which has been my logo in many places.

This, of course, is the official ELC Anemone. It is the current logo for ELC, and is also my avatar in many places. It was only used in the header here briefly, because its size made it off-center.

The ELC Anemone was replaced by the newest anemone, the CLC Anemone:

This baby took a while to make, and it uses ray tracing and radosity. It's inside a large sphere with red and orange splotches inside to create the explosion thing behind it. I really love the way it came out. It's the logo for Completely Leet Chat, the next version of ELC.

Now, I leave you with the current image being used as the header here. It has an alpha channel, which makes the bg slightly transparent. Cool!

More Computer Rants (AKA Eep! Long!)

Ok I'm bugged about my friend's computer again, so I'm posting again. Yesterday he bought a $90 WD 250gb hard drive (which really pissed him off, because when it was installed it said that it was 233.88gb, not 250gb), and called me before purchasing to make sure he was buying the right kind. He was really worried when I told him to get an IDE drive and the box said eIDE on it, but I figured "Hey, it's still IDE," and told him to buy it.

*Insert trip to see V for Vendetta a school day here*

So then I go over to his house to help him install it (3:30).
We get the computer unplugged and shut down (3:45).
Computer is open (3:50).
We realize that his computer only has one hard drive rack (3:55).
-Begin Failure-
Ok, we can improvise. There are extra removable media racks that the drive would fit in (4:10).
We have unplugged the current hard drive, the 9-in-1 media reader, the dvd burner (read: the dvd burner), and basically anything else blocking our way to this empty rack, except for this huge cluster of power cables that seems to be soldered onto the mobo. Oh well, we can work around it (4:25).
After struggling to fit the drive in, we decide to remove the 9-in-1 media reader (4:30).
We fail (4:35).
We replace the reader and ponder what to do next (4:37).
We ponder (4:45).
*Bing!* Idea strikes (5:10).
Idea also fails (5:10).
Ok enough of that. To put it simply, we end up just plugging everything back in and placing (/dropping) the hard drive on the floor of the computer case, plugged in and stuff. We boot 'er up, and it doesn't recognize the drive. It also won't open the dvd burner, so I assume we set the master/slave jumpers wrong. We opened the box again, and set them all right. This time *WHAM* the drive works! =D So we set it to partition it (/:Y, isnt that cool?), and I leave to return to my dwelling.

A few hours later, my friend calls. His dvd burner still won't open. Dammit, the thing we forgot to check! So I'm going back there tomorrow to check that out...

In between these escapades, I attempted to uninstall ZoneAlarm a few times, and experimented with alt+f4 :P

Alienware - No Longer L33t

This move by Dell is to get closer to the gaming community, and ultimately AMD themselves. Pitiful. They acquire one of the l33test companies in the world to escape Intel. You signed up with them, you can go down with them too.

Longest Installer in the History of the World

I'm at my friend's house, trying to help him install Maya 7. I figured this would be easy, just open the setup.exe on the disc and install.
Well, I was wrong. Very wrong. There are a few complications here. First of all, my friend has 3 virtual drives, all called basically the same thing as his DVD drive, meaning it took a while to even find the setup.exe file. Then, his firewall. ZoneAlarm or something. It seems like every time Maya tries to install another file, I get a popup that says 'ZoneAlarm has detected a program doing something you might want to look at', which stalls the installer and waits for me to click 'allow'. If this weren't annoying enough, I've waited through at least 5 loading bars, which all say 'Please wait while I install Maya 7.0'. WHAT IS IT DOING THAT REQUIRES A FREAKING 15 MINUTE LONG INSTALLER?!?!?!?!

Update: While I'm on the topic of this dude's computer, may I mention that apart from a few awesome programs like 3ds and maya (whose legality are questionable), his computer sucks. It didn't come with MSPaint, Calculator, or Sound Recorder. It refuses to install service pack 2 (or any updates, for that matter...). He's looking to upgrade it, but I'm thinking that he should back up the files he needs to a DVD and scrap it.

Word 'Style' Check

Did you know that you can set Microsoft word to check for 'style' in your writing? Yeah that's right, I said style. In the style settings, you can set it to check for the following and much more: Use of And, But, and Hopefully in the opening of a sentence; Cliches, Colloquiaslisms, and Jargon; Sentence length; Unclear Phrasing; and get this - Wordiness. Compare that to Appleworks, which (as far as I know) doesn't have a freakin' grammer checker!

Also, you can turn on 'readablity statistics,' which tell you the basics (word count, char count), the above average (avg. sentences per paragraph, and avg. words per sentence), and the ridiculously above average, and a bit average (reading ease and grade level). Read - Grade Level. It actually delivers a GPA based on the document. It seems a bit off, though. I have 1 sentence and an incomplete title, and it gave me a 3.7. Yeah, not so much.

ELC Public Release 1

Hey everyone! Gather round and uncle Zib will tell you a story. Once upon a time, there were only standard, big-company instant messengers. Small companies just didn't make chat programs. Programs had almost no emoticons. Only 16! (*Gasp!*) But all that changed when ELC was released by Sabretooth Software. It was an open-source freeware chat client that supported plug-ins, emoticons, and all the standard chat client functions, but woah-hey! It was made by a two-man team! (*Gaspx2!*) The world and the way people saw chat programs was changed forever. Ok now uncle Zib is tired, story time's over. Go home!

I recently discovered that I want a Mac (Big surprise, a year ago I hated Mac and all that it was). I have my heart set on a dual core Intel mini. Last night, I decided to pull out the old Shakespear and modify it a bit to make sense here, and here's what I came up with (by the way, this is the famous balcony scene from Romeo & Juliet, Scene 2 Act 2):

Extreme Overclocking up to 5.25Ghz - Google Video

This is crazy. Yesterday my friend and I watched a bunch of home movies on Google Video of 2 french guys blowing up computers and stuff (sometimes with bombs, sometimes with tractors, sometimes just by removing the heatsink), called Extreme Overclocking. I thought that was cool until I found the 5 ghz Project. These guys rigged up a liquid nitrogen/compressor cooling system for their computer and managed to get up to 5.25ghz without it overheating. That's crazy. The fastest processor I've found on the market is a 4ghz CPU for a few thousand bucks. 5.25ghz is crazy. Crazy. Ridiculously crazy. Man.

A letter from Rand/D'mala Shard

I just went back to the site of the second-best web comic on the internet (before it was closed, that is): Squidi.net. It's now just a blog updated by the ex-author of the comic A Modest Destiny. But the 'hat' posts were so powerful that I need to post about them. Read the first 'hat' post first, then the follow-up. The first one is the usualy political mumbo-jumbo we get from Squidi (which makes some very strong and good points) (I'm a libral democrat by the way), but the follow-up made me say 'Oh snap.' He even posted the idiot's e-mail address because (to quote Squidi) "While I normally consider email to be private correspondence, Mr. Harter has already expressed his belief that privacy isn't particularly important."

Uru Anniversary

But! Marie Sutherland (of the DRC) has announced that next week something will happen! :D

Microsoft has finally released Internet Explorer 7 beta 2. I must say, it has improved a lot since v6, what with consolidated menus, tab browsing, tab previews, and a kick-@$$ GUI to boot! I'll update my IE when the official release comes out, but until it's completely skinnable and extendable, as well as when all the security holes are fixed so it isnt as secure as a slice of swiss cheese, I'll still be a faithful Firefox user.

I'm browsing through the iTunes library right now, looking for music to buy. I'm using the 'Just For You - beta' thing, to get recommended songs. I get to the end of the list.

I click the 'more' button, just in case, and there's a pop-up that reads something like this.

Installing Linux

I've decided that I want to run an Uru server. I have a computer I'm going to buy, but until then I'm using a little piece of crap computer that I got for free. It's got 128mb of RAM and less than a 1ghz processor, which I don't think is fast enough to run an anything server on, but it is something. I'm going to use the computer for practice installing Linux and the Uru servers, and possibly run a local Uru server on it. I'm using Ubuntu Linux 5.10 for the OS, because I like Ubuntu. It's the king of freeware. It comes pre-installed with Firefox, Thunderbird, and The Gimp, three of the five best freeware programs on the internet (the free five are Firefox, Thunderbird, The Gimp, Blender, and Trillian). All computers should come equipped with them, sadly most do not.

Anyway, I'm going to post updates about the install here.

EDIT: Oh and I just realized that Tomato (the new computer) has 2 30gb IDE drives, which I can use in my 2 main computers when I get the real server (my computers require IDE drives sadly, but I can use these!). That means that I'll have $300 to spend on whatever I want!

Yeah, so that was fun. 2 items off of my list, but the others are great too. The 8 ball is now an official desk toy, joining the Slinky and the Super Noodle Ball (which technically isn't mine, but it's on my desk.)

I wish I had gotten a shirt (or 6) from thinkgeek, but that's what birthdays are for, right? :P

Withdrawal Solution

Well, right now I am at my friend Cutter's house, having a sleepover party. Only problem is...these people don't have Uru, and I suddenly am really really bored. The kind of boredom that can only be cured by Uru.

So here is my solution to Uru (and other game) withdrawal: A Western Digital 80gig portable hard drive. Install Uru directly to that, then simply boot it from any computer at hand! :D It's crazy, but my sleep/Uru-deprived brain seems to think that I'm a genius, and I feel like believing it. I'll probably either find some flaw in the plan, or realize its complete stupidity tomorrow morning. :P

Santa Claus

My family is Jewish, so we (obviously) don't believe in Mr. C, but due to the recent barrage of holiday movies (mainly The Polar Express), my little brother has a bit of 'the magic' in him. Today he brought up the whole idea of Santa Claus and his enterprise, saying this:

"So is Santa the leader of the present factory?"

And I replied "Yeah I guess," (an easy way out of the conversation which would probably end in me telling him that Santa doesn't exist). He thought about this for a minute, then said:

"But in Polar Express, there's that leader elf. So what if Santa is just the delivery boy?"

That surprised me. I guess I never really thought about it, but it makes sense in a way. Why would the guy who leads all the elves bother delivering the presents himself? Why not get the elves to do it for him? The answer: The big C is actually employed to the elves, who are too small to deliver all the presents themselves. The big, jolly, red-suited man we've come to know and love is actually just the delivery boy for the elven empire!

The Legend of Zelda - Then & Now

I'm gonna do a retro vs. modern thing now. Buckle up.
Ok so despite the mind-numbing repetition of the LoZ series, most of the games were different enough to be worth money (yes, I said LoZ has lots of repetition. When is Zelda going to learn to just not go outside? How many times do you have to kill Ganon for him to die?!). The first ones (thats a funny trailer for a LoZ Snes game, thanks to Cutter for it) were really all the same game, possibly with updated sprites/maps. The best LoZ game thus far (I'm sure almost all of the LoZ fans will agree with me on this point) was Ocarina of Time, for N64 (sorry for the quality of that trailer, it's the best I could find). Best gameplay (IMO), and extremely good graphics for the N64. Then we got Majora's Mask, which required so much overclocking of the 64 that you needed to buy an extension to even play it. That right there signifies a game that should have had more time devoted to development and a release on the next-gen console, the Gamecube. But no, we got Master Quest for the Gamecube. Master Quest was pushing it in my book. It was a re-release of OoT with maybe a new level or so. Along with MQ we got that little disk with the old games (the really old ones, that I mentioned at the beginning of this whole thing) and a preview of the next game, The Wind Waker. I never really played this game as much as the others, but it gets the stamp of approval for the cartoon-style graphics, which set it apart from all of the LoZ before it. Plus the fact that (correct me if I'm wrong here) the characters weren't Link and Zelda, but some other tight-wearing elf and his sister. OK. Now for the second best LoZ, Four Swords Adventures. This game is (obviously) an awesome multiplayer. It's fun to betray your friends by nabbing some level 2 bombs and making them go splodey. The next LoZ game is going to be called LoZ: Twilight Princess (watch official trailer 3). This trailer is amazing. I don't like the swimming part, the transitions are a bit choppy from 1 animation to the next. But other than that, this game looks like it will be the best Legend of Zelda game yet, even better than the legendary Ocarina of Time.

So here's the retro/modern ratings:
Graphics:
Retro: Meh. 2D sprites, mainly unvarying from game to game.
Modern: 3D models/animations, varying by a lot from game to game (OoT > WW > 4S > TP)

Gameplay:
Retro: Got boring after a while. Only so much repetition is tolerable.
Modern: A bit more variance, but still not enough to really satisfy me. 4S had that interesting twist in the gameplay, though.

Story:
Basically the same as Gameplay.

Trailers:
Retro: Mad funny commercials. But not really enough shots of the gameplay to count as a good trailer. (Ha ha...here's another one!)
Modern: Not really as funny, and if the graphics aren't good they shouldn't be shown in an ad. But for twilight princess, that trailer could be for a movie, man.

I'd say that the modern games are probably better than the retro ones, but that much was obivious. I'd recommend the retro ones if you like playing old stuff, because LoZ was the king of the old games.

I think its time to write about culture. I think its a bit funny to look back at what humans used to be, and see how much we've progressed...And then sharply declined. I'll start at the beginning:
Cavemen- primitive, lived out very short lives. Some tools.
Iron age- more tools, some religion. Lives still short, feudal system.
Ancient Rome- many tools, technological advancements. Democracy, medicine, longer lives. War.
Mideval- Lots of sickness, decline in medicine. Much religion, feudal/monarch system. More war
Reniassance- Advance in arts, religion, medicine- longer lives. Less war.
Colonial- Much more religion, a few wars. Lives are still short, medicine remains average.
70's- Hippys! Woot! War. Lots-o-war.
Modern- Ok here we are. Obescity, video games. Computers. War over nothing. Dancing? Simply shuffling back and forth. Music is just people complaining about love, without any melody. Even the quality of our video games has declined, as proved by this poster.

I apologize for this post, I know it's poorly written...but I'm tired. Deal with it. :P

Ubuntu broke my computer!

Well, poop. Today I tried (for kicks) booting my Uru computer with Ubuntu Linux, and it was cool. Cool, until I decided to turn it off and reboot with windows. Not cool because, well, it never happened. I turned off the computer and turned it back on, and it immediatly booted Ubuntu. No 'DELL' start-screen, no list to select where to boot from, rien. So I take the Ubuntu disk out and try rebooting. Faliure. The disk-active light turns on and blinks, then turns off. The computer claims it's on, but the monitor doesn't show anything, the keyboard is unresponsive (the caps lock light won't turn on), and obviously the mouse doesn't work either. The CPU-active light is off, it's really completely dead. If anyone is interested, I also have a KVM switcher hooked up to that computer and this one...HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Here's an annoying fact about my computers: they're in a room with windows in it. So yeah, in the morning I get some nice sun shining in the room, and that's nice. But at 2:15...RIGHT when I get back from school and am about to go into URU/Myst withdrawal, the sun is positioned juuuust right so that the sunlight lands directly on my monitor. It's like using a GameBoy Wormlight. It does nothing except reflect off the screen into your eyes, making the screen even harder to see...Yes, it's gone by 2:45, but very annoying all the same.

Thunder Blizzard

Well, we didn't get a snow day. But heck, we should have.

An hour before school starts, the snow begins to fall. It starts slow, like most storms, but an hour later, it's pouring. The snowplows are nowhere to be seen. Three hours later, you can't see 5 yards ahead of you. At 1:00, there's a clap of thunder, and a lightning flash. Crazy! It's like something out of a horror story, there's so much snow, plus the thunder...

When we get to our driveway (which is slanted upwards slightly), we can't get in. We get out and shovel a bit, but to no avail. We leave the car half in the street (I live on a semi-quiet street), and come back two ours later, when the storm has stopped. We manage to get the car in, but only after 15 minutes of shoveling...

Like I said before, a snow day would have been good...

Vintage LEGO

Lego has just today released the Vintage LEGO Sets, up for buying on eBay. They are in mint condition, and are real LEGO sets from the 70's. One of the sets up for sale is LEGO set #135. For reference, the LEGO set numbers are now in the 10000's! Apparently, there were leftover sets from then, so LEGO has decided to sell them off. Good luck winning one though, the current bids range from $115.00 to $1.00, but on eBay...who knows?

Supervillian Rights?

I've been wondering about this for a while now. Do supervillians have rights? I mean, if they get paid by their supervillian bosses, does minimum wage apply to them? Or do they just get a cut of what they steal? Do they get health insurance? Why don't they get a trial by jury? I mean, why was it OK for Batman to just throw Joker into that vat of acid or whatever? Why isn't Batman arrested and charged with manslaughter? Or is murder in self-defense now OK?

What about car insurance? Are supervillians allowed to buy insurance on their evilMobiles? Take a look at one of them some time, they must cost a fortune. Then Superman goes and throws it off a bridge. No wonder their goal in life is to get their hands on Krytonite, I'd be mad too if some guy in spandex came and chucked my million dollar car off a bridge!

And taxes...Do they have to pay income tax on the stuff they steal? Considering the fact that most supervillians are mil/billionaires, do they get tax cuts? Speaking of which, what about supervillian suffrage? Are they allowed to vote? Or serve in the military?

Other folder vs. URU game folder

An odd thing just happened. I'm clearing space on my URU computer (yes, it is so that I can install another copy of the game), and I discover that my 'other' folder (which has my backups of the game data, saved games, images, etc.) is almost 3 times as large as the folder that holds the URU game. Wow. I mean, I don't have every single file in the game, and many of them are zipped...I would have expected the game itself to be bigger! Oh well, now I can install at least 2 more copies of URU! :D

The Principality of Sealand

The Principality of Sealand is an awesome place. It started as an abandoned WW2 British fortress, but has since been reoccupied and declared a country by Prince Roy of Sealand. They have a flag, a monetary system, stamps, passports, a national anthem...all of it! They have won two 'wars' (the first was against a UK navy ship, which left when fired upon, the second was an attempted invasion and kidnapping), and have a thriving buisness. It really is amazing, but the Principality of Sealand is its own country.

The Neverhood

For those of you who don't know (probably most people), The Neverhood is another great adventure game. It's constructed entirely from clay, and envolves a large mushroom that makes you burp when you eat it. What more could you ask for in a game?

But seriously, the game is very similar to Myst, in that its a non-violent (well, i won't talk about the ending here) puzzle-solving adventure game. It's not the best-looking game of all time, but considering that work on it began in 1988 (and the system requirements asks for windows 98), it looks great. The Neverhood is very fun, if a bit difficult at times. If you can find it, buy it.
